About This Tour

Upper Mustang delivers what may be the single best mountain biking terrain in Nepal vast open desert canyons, rideable single and doubletrack winding between ochre and red rock formations, and one of the most culturally rich destinations in the Himalaya: the walled medieval city of Lo Manthang. This is a restricted area, still gated off from independent travel, which means the trails here see very little traffic and remain some of the wildest riding anywhere in the country.

The route flies into Jomsom and rides north past Kagbeni into the restricted zone, climbing through Chele, Syangboche and Ghami before crossing Nyi La Pass to reach Lo Manthang once the seat of an independent Buddhist kingdom, and still home to centuries-old monasteries, a working royal palace and ancient sky caves. From there riders loop back via a different route through Charang and Ghar Gompa, descending along the Kali Gandaki Gorge back through Marpha’s apple orchards and finishing near Tatopani’s natural hot springs. Trail conditions vary from smooth, fast jeep track to loose, technical and genuinely demanding singletrack this is a serious riding trip for experienced mountain bikers.
