Lower Mustang Trek (Jomsom–Muktinath)
About This Trek
Lower Mustang offers nearly everything that makes the Mustang region famous — stark desert canyons, whitewashed Thakali villages, Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and one of the world’s most important pilgrimage sites — without the restricted-area permit, long trekking days or high cost of Upper Mustang. It’s the ideal choice for trekkers with limited time or those who want a rewarding cultural trek without a strenuous high-altitude commitment.
The route follows the ancient salt-trade and pilgrimage trail up the Kali Gandaki Gorge — the deepest gorge on Earth — flanked by Annapurna and Dhaulagiri on either side. You’ll walk through Kagbeni’s narrow medieval alleys, climb to the sacred temple complex at Muktinath where Hindu and Buddhist traditions share the same holy ground, and wind down through Marpha, Mustang’s famous apple-growing capital, before returning to Jomsom.
