Annapurna Base Camp Trek
About This Trek
The Annapurna Base Camp trek — often called the Annapurna Sanctuary trek — leads deep into a natural amphitheater ringed by some of the world’s highest peaks: Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Hiunchuli and Gangapurna all rise directly above base camp itself. Unlike treks that build to a single high point, ABC gradually draws you into an ever-narrowing valley, the mountains closing in around you a little more each day until you’re standing in the middle of them.
The route climbs through terraced rice fields and subtropical forest into Ghandruk and Chhomrong — two of the largest and most striking Gurung villages in the Annapurna region — before entering dense bamboo and rhododendron forest on the approach to the Sanctuary. Because Annapurna Base Camp sits at 4,130m, considerably lower than Everest Base Camp, altitude sickness risk is more manageable, making this one of the most accessible high-mountain treks in Nepal for first-timers. The trek finishes with a well-earned soak in the natural hot springs at Jhinu Danda on the way back down.
