Annapurna Circuit Trek
About This Trek
The Annapurna Circuit is one of the world’s classic long-distance treks — a full loop around the Annapurna massif that takes you from subtropical rice terraces at under 1,000m to the wind-scoured high desert of Manang and Mustang above 5,000m, all in a single journey. Few routes anywhere pack in this much variety: dense rhododendron forest, glacial rivers, Gurung and Thakali villages, ancient Buddhist gompas, natural hot springs and finally the dramatic crossing of Thorong La Pass — one of the highest trekking passes in the world.
The trail follows the Marsyangdi River valley upward through Chame and Pisang before opening into the high, dry Manang valley, where two acclimatization days let your body adjust to the thinning air. From there the trek climbs steadily to Thorong Phedi before the early-morning push over the pass to Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists.
The descent through the Kali Gandaki Gorge — the deepest gorge on Earth — brings you into Marpha’s apple orchards, the hot springs of Tatopani and the sunrise viewpoint at Poon Hill before the trail finally winds back down to Pokhara. Because of its gradual altitude gain and well-established teahouse network, the Annapurna Circuit is one of the more achievable high-altitude treks in Nepal for reasonably fit trekkers.
